PIM Integration: How a PIM Connects to Your Ecommerce Platform

Last Updated:
October 29, 2026

PIM integration is the connection that moves product data between your product information management (PIM) system and the other systems that use it, most often your ecommerce platform. The PIM holds the approved version of each product. The integration sends those attributes, descriptions, images and categories to your storefront, and keeps them in step as products change.

How you set up that connection decides how much manual work your team does after launch. With a good integration, one edit in the PIM reaches every storefront. With a weak one, teams may have to re-export files by hand, and listings can drift out of date.

What is PIM integration?

The PIM sits in the middle of your product data. It takes in data from suppliers and internal systems, and sends finished product content out to the channels where you sell.

The ecommerce platform is the most important connection, because that is where shoppers see the data. A PIM usually also connects to an ERP, which owns operational data like price and stock, and to a DAM, which stores master image and video files. Getting the PIM vs ERP split right is what keeps the two systems from overwriting each other.

Teams that sell on Amazon or Walmart add those marketplaces as further channels.

How does a PIM integrate with an ecommerce platform?

There are four common ways to connect a PIM to an ecommerce platform. A large catalog can use more than one, for example a native connector for the main storefront and file feeds for an older channel.

MethodHow it worksBest fitWatch for
Native app or connectorA prebuilt integration installed from the platform's app store or the PIM's marketplaceStandard setups on Shopify, BigCommerce or Adobe CommerceLimits on which fields and objects it can map
Direct API integrationYour developers or a partner build the connection on the PIM and platform APIsCustom data models and headless storefrontsBuild and upkeep cost, and API rate limits on large syncs
iPaaS or middlewareAn integration platform sits between systems and handles field mapping and retriesMany systems connected at once, such as PIM, ERP, storefront and marketplacesAnother tool to license and monitor
File feeds (CSV or XML over SFTP)The PIM exports a file on a schedule and the platform imports itOlder platforms and one-way updatesNo real-time updates, and errors are easy to miss

Whichever method you choose, decide first which system owns each type of data. When two systems write to the same field, each sync can overwrite the other's changes.

  • The PIM owns product content: attributes, titles, descriptions, categories, translations and the links to approved images.
  • The ERP owns operational data: price, stock, cost and item codes. In a NetSuite setup, for example, NetSuite usually stays the system of record for inventory and pricing.
  • The DAM owns master asset files: original images, video and usage rights.
  • The ecommerce platform owns transactions and merchandising: orders, customers, promotions and how products are grouped on the storefront.

Product content flows out from the PIM to the platform. Data can also flow the other way. If your team creates a product in Shopify or edits its SEO title there, a two-way integration copies that change back to the PIM.

How do you integrate a PIM with Shopify?

How to connect

A PIM usually connects to Shopify through an app from the Shopify App Store, or through a custom integration your developers build. Either way, the PIM sends each product's title, description, variants, images, tags and category, then keeps them in sync as products change.

Product fields and metafields

Shopify's built-in product fields cover the basics, so extra PIM attributes like material or fit usually go into metafields, which are custom fields you add to a product. Map each attribute to a specific metafield before the first sync, and check that your theme displays it.

If you skip this step, a value like "Material: 100% linen" can sync into Shopify but never appear on the product page. That's a problem, because a shopper cares if the shirt is made of linen or not, and that decides whether they buy.

Variants

Shopify supports up to 2,048 variants per product. Each variant needs an option value, such as size or color, written the same way across your catalog, so a color called "Charcoal" on one shirt isn't "Dark grey" on the next.

Categories

Map your internal taxonomy to Shopify's Standard Product Taxonomy, which gives each product one standard category. Then use collections to group products on the storefront, for example a "New arrivals" or "Summer linen" collection.

How do you integrate a PIM with Magento (Adobe Commerce)?

How to connect

Adobe Commerce, formerly Magento, connects to a PIM through an extension from the Adobe Commerce Marketplace or a custom integration. Scheduled CSV imports also work if you only need one-way updates.

Attribute sets

Adobe Commerce organizes product data into attribute sets. Each attribute set defines which attributes a type of product has, so a shirt might have fabric and fit while a lamp has wattage and bulb type.

Map your PIM's product families to attribute sets before anything syncs. If a family has attributes that are missing from the matching attribute set, those values can fail on import.

Variants

Variants use configurable products: one parent product with a simple child product for each size or color combination. The attributes that create the variants, like color, need to be dropdown attributes in Adobe Commerce, with option values that match the PIM.

Languages and store views

In Magento, a store view is a version of your store, usually one per language or country. A French store view shows French copy and a German store view shows German copy, while both share the same products.

Any attribute set to store view scope can hold a different value in each store view. Your integration needs to send each translation to the right store view. If it doesn't, the French store can end up showing the default English description.

How do PIM fields map to each ecommerce platform?

Each platform stores the same product data in a different structure. For example, a linen shirt sold in three sizes and two colors, with English and French copy, is one product with six variants on Shopify, with the French copy saved as a translation. On Adobe Commerce, it is one configurable product with six child products, and the French copy sits in a French store view.

This table shows where the main parts of a PIM record land on six common platforms.

PlatformWhere product copy goesHow variants workHow categories workHow languages work
ShopifyThe description field. Extra attributes go in custom fields (metafields)Up to 2,048 variants under one productOne standard Shopify category per product, plus collections you create to group productsTranslated text stored per language, set up with Shopify Markets
Adobe Commerce (Magento)Description and short description, plus the attributes in the product's attribute setOne parent product with a child product for each size or color (configurable products)A category tree for each storeA store view for each language, each holding its own translated text
Salesforce Commerce CloudProduct fields and custom fields in the product catalogOne parent product with a child product for each combination (master and variation products)A separate site catalog places products into the storefront's categoriesTranslated text stored per locale, with locales turned on for each site
BigCommerceThe description field, plus custom fieldsVariants built from options, up to 600 per productA category tree, which can differ for each storefrontTranslated text per storefront and language (in beta)
WooCommerceDescription and short descriptionOne parent product with a variation for each size or color (variable products)Nested product categories, plus tagsA translation plugin, since WooCommerce has none built in
NetSuite (SuiteCommerce)Website fields on the item record, such as the store display name and detailed descriptionOne parent item with a child item for each size or color (matrix items)Commerce categoriesTranslations set up on the SuiteCommerce website

The variant row matters most when you plan the sync. For example, a sofa sold in 30 fabrics and 30 sizes is 900 combinations. That fits on Shopify, but BigCommerce caps a product at 600 variants, so the style would need splitting into two products. Check limits like these against your PIM data model before you map anything.

What are PIM integration best practices?

Many PIM integration problems trace back to mapping and ownership decisions made late in the project. These practices help prevent the common ones.

  1. Map every field before the first sync. List each PIM attribute, its destination field on each platform, the field's type and its character limit. Decide how units travel: as one value ("12 in") or as a value and a unit.
  2. Validate before anything publishes. Set completeness rules per channel, so a product missing a required field stays in the PIM until it is fixed instead of failing on the storefront.
  3. Sync only what changed. Delta syncs send changed records only, which keeps large catalogs inside API rate limits. Use event-driven updates (webhooks) for fast-moving data and scheduled syncs for the rest.
  4. Keep variant values consistent. "XL", "X-Large" and "Extra large" become three different options on most platforms. Standardize values in the PIM before they sync.
  5. Monitor failed syncs. Send alerts for rejected records and API errors, and review them weekly. A sync can report success while individual products fail.

When you replace an existing PIM, your storefront still has to receive product data throughout the PIM migration. Check that every product syncs correctly to the storefront before you switch over.

How does the Hypotenuse AI PIM connect to your ecommerce platform?

Hypotenuse AI is an AI-native PIM with bi-directional sync to ecommerce platforms and ERPs. AI enriches and checks your product data in one place, and only approved data goes back out to your channels.

  • Shopify: the Shopify PIM integration connects to your store, imports products, variants and metafields, and keeps Shopify aligned with ongoing two-way sync.
  • Salesforce Commerce Cloud: the Salesforce Commerce Cloud PIM integration exports approved product data and content to SFCC in the structure it expects, including a parent-level record for every product.
  • NetSuite: the NetSuite PIM integration keeps NetSuite as your system of record for inventory and pricing, and pushes clean product data back into it.
  • Magento (Adobe Commerce): the Magento PIM integration maps approved values to your attribute sets and configurable products, and sends each translation to the right store view.
  • BigCommerce: the BigCommerce PIM integration maps approved values to your custom fields and variant options, and sends the right categories and content to each storefront.
  • Other PIMs: connect with Salsify, Akeneo, Plytix or Stibo.

Before anything syncs, Hypotenuse AI fills missing attributes from supplier feeds, spec sheets, product images and the web, and validates each product against your rules and each channel's requirements. Every change goes through your approval workflow and role permissions, so nothing publishes without sign-off. For marketplaces, the same approved data goes out through product data syndication.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best PIM integration platform?

The best option is the one your ecommerce platform and PIM already support well. A native connector suits a single storefront. An iPaaS suits teams connecting a PIM to several storefronts and an ERP at once, because it manages every connection's mapping and retries in one place.

Do you need an integration partner to connect a PIM?

Not for a native connector, which your team can usually configure itself. Custom API integrations and middleware projects usually involve a partner or in-house developers, especially when the data model is complex or the ERP is part of the flow.

Conclusion

A PIM integration holds up when each system owns its own data and every field is mapped before the first sync. From there, the work is keeping variant values consistent and watching for failed records.

The field map is the best place to start. List every attribute you hold today and where it needs to land on each storefront. Hypotenuse AI's AI-native PIM enriches and validates product data before it syncs, with approval at every step. To see how it works with your storefront, book a demo.
