Product Data Enrichment vs PIM: What's the Difference, and Do You Need Both?

A PIM (product information management system) is where your team stores and manages product information, and sends it to your sales channels. Product data enrichment fills in the details that information is missing, and corrects and standardizes the values already there.

Most large catalogs need both. The real decision is whether you need a separate tool for enrichment, or one platform that does both.

The examples below follow an electronics retailer carrying 40,000 SKUs from 120 brands.

What is the difference between product data enrichment and a PIM?

A PIM is the central place for product data. Your team stores and works on product information there, and sends finished records to your webshop and marketplaces. For more on what a PIM covers, see our guide to product information management.

Enrichment is the work of making that information complete and correct. It reads the sources you have, such as brand spec sheets, supplier spreadsheets, product images and web pages, and turns them into values in the right fields. It also catches values that are wrong, such as a screen size that doesn't match the spec sheet.

For the retailer, a brand may send a 12-page PDF for a laptop. Enrichment pulls the processor, RAM, screen size and battery life out of that PDF into separate attributes. The PIM holds that record while the team works on it, then sends it to the webshop and each marketplace.

Does a PIM do product data enrichment?

A PIM can show you what's missing. Most let you set required attributes for each category and report how complete each product is. So for the electronics retailer selling laptops, a PIM can flag every laptop that's missing its battery life. Filling those values in is enrichment.

Without an enrichment step, that work falls to people. Which means someone has to open each spec sheet, find the battery life, and type it into the field in the PIM.

Several PIM vendors now include AI features that suggest values or draft copy inside the PIM. When comparing them, see whether the AI can show the source for each value it suggests. Values with a source are easier to review, and they tend to be more accurate, since each one can be traced back to where it came from.

Should I run enrichment and PIM in one platform or separate platforms?

Both setups work. The choice comes down to how much integration work you want to take on, and how settled your current PIM is.

What do you gain from one platform?

Fewer resources. One platform means one system to set up and maintain. There's no integration to build or keep running between two tools.

Less hassle. Enrichment and review happen where the product record lives. Reviewers check and approve values without moving between tools or waiting for data to sync.

Fewer chances of mistakes. Every handoff between two systems is a place for errors to creep in. A field mapped to the wrong attribute, or a value edited in one tool and not the other, can leave a product wrong on your site. With one platform, there's only one copy of each value.

For the retailer, that means a new laptop goes in once, and is enriched and reviewed in the same place it's sent to the webshop from.

When does it make sense to keep them separate?

Keeping your current PIM and connecting an enrichment tool to it can make sense if your PIM was implemented recently, or if many other systems depend on it. The trade-off is the integration between the two tools, which needs to be set up and maintained.

Do you need a PIM, product data enrichment or both?

Start with where your team's time goes today.

If this sounds like youWhat to look for
You don't have a PIM yet, and supplier data arrives incompleteA PIM with enrichment built in, so new products are completed as they come in.
You already run a PIM, but many records in it are incompleteEnrichment that connects to your current PIM, or a platform that does both if you're open to moving.
Product data arrives complete, but keeping every channel consistent is hardA PIM. Enrichment built in still helps keep new products complete as your catalog grows.

How do you add AI enrichment to a PIM you already have?

If you keep your current PIM, adding enrichment mostly comes down to deciding what the enrichment tool can read and what it can change.

  1. Choose what to pull in. Start with the products and attributes that matter most. For the retailer, that may be laptops and their required attributes.
  2. Map the fields. Match each attribute in the enrichment tool to the field it belongs to in your PIM, including units and allowed values.
  3. Decide which fields the tool can write to. Values your team has already approved, and fields your ERP owns such as price and stock, should stay off limits. The tool then fills only what's missing.
  4. Review before anything is written back. Check flagged values first, then approve the rest in bulk.
  5. Run new products through the same flow. Once the backlog is done, new SKUs from each brand go through enrichment before they reach the PIM.

Step 3 is what keeps enrichment from overwriting good data. If the tool can only write to empty fields, or to the attributes you've chosen, approved values stay as they are.

How does Hypotenuse AI work with a PIM?

Hypotenuse AI does both in one platform, and it can also connect to the PIM you already run. Hypotenuse AI PIM can be your PIM, or work alongside the one you have.

SetupHow Hypotenuse AI works
As your PIMActs as the single source of truth for product data and images, with enrichment, categorization, content generation and image editing built in.
Alongside Akeneo, Salsify, Plytix or StiboConnects to your PIM and pulls in the products and attributes you select. It enriches the data and generates content, then writes approved values back to the fields you mapped.
Protecting approved dataYou choose which fields Hypotenuse AI is allowed to write to during setup.
ReviewEvery value shows the source it came from. Values the AI is less sure of are flagged, and the rest can be approved in bulk.
Who reviewsReview and approval happen inside Hypotenuse AI, so merchandisers and category managers can work on product content without each needing a PIM licence.
